ABSTRACT

Physical inactivity is becoming an important threat to public health in today's society. The COVID-19 pandemic has also reduced physical activity (PA) levels given all the restrictions imposed worldwide. In this work, physical activity interventions supported by mobile devices and relying on control engineering principles were proposed. The model was constructed relying on previous studies that consider a fluid analogy of Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), which is a psychological theory that describes how people acquire and maintain certain behaviors, including health-promoting behaviors, through the interplay of personal, environmental, and behavioral factors. The obtained model was validated using secondary data (collected earlier) from a real intervention with a group of male subjects in Great Britain. The present model was extended with new technology for a better understanding of behavior change interventions. This involved the use of applications, such as phone-based ecological momentary assessments, to collect behavioral data and the inclusion of simulations with logical reward conditions for reaching the behavioral threshold. A goal of 10,000 steps per day is recommended due to the significant link observed between higher daily step counts and lower mortality risk. The intervention was designed using a Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithm configured to obtain a desired performance. The system was tested and validated using simulation scenarios that resemble different situations that may occur in a real setting.

ABSTRACT

Digital technology is expected to improve care and address significant service pressures within the National Health Service and social care though evidence on how their implementation might be optimised is lacking. This study explores how one such example, home-based sensors with artificial intelligence capabilities, was implemented in English social care to identify changes in behaviour that indicate the onset of potentially more serious issues. Its focus was staff perspectives on decision-making processes and implementation, to inform recommendations for others exploring the potential of new and emerging technology. Qualitative data were collected from 18 semistructured interviews conducted across three sites delivering social care, with senior decision makers, operational leads, and care staff. We identified several issues with the selection process and implementation of AI-based technology in social care, including a lack of consensus around what success would look like, problems identifying and evaluating alternatives, and technical challenges to implementation, as well as obstacles to developing a longer-term, more preventative approach in a system experienced as focused on responding to acute needs. Ultimately, the research confirmed a number of recognised implementation challenges associated with training, resource, and acceptability to staff and patients. It added particular insights around the anxieties experienced by frontline staff and the cultural shift required of preventative interventions in a system geared to meeting acute crises. That many barriers are familiar suggests a particular need to focus on helping policymakers/local leaders avoid similar pitfalls in the future.

ABSTRACT

PurposeVirtual and augmented reality solutions in medicine are generally applied in communication, training, simulation and therapy. However, like most new digital developments, these technologies face a large number of institutional barriers that are inherent to the medical sector.Design/methodology/approachFollowing Richard Scott's view on institutions and organizations, a multiple case study is used to analyze regulatory, normative and cultural-cognitive institutional pillars in the medical industry.FindingsThe results of the study demonstrate that (1) the regulatory pillar inhibits the advancement of new technologies in the approach to treatment, regulation of patient data, educational processes for medical staff, and information and financial flows;(2) the number of barriers increases based on the solution's level of disruption and the number of variable conventional procedures;(3) trust between participants in the medical industry plays an important role in introducing new technologies;(4) new participants need to address certain pillars depending on the area of application.Originality/valueThe authors discuss top-down and bottom-up approaches for overcoming institutional barriers when implementing augmented and virtual reality solutions for companies focusing on the medical market.

ABSTRACT

Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies are widely used for diagnosis and therapy. Given the unique dimeric structure of IgG, we hypothesized that, by genetically fusing a homodimeric protein (catenator) to the C-terminus of IgG, reversible catenation of antibody molecules could be induced on a surface where target antigen molecules are abundant, and that it could be an effective way to greatly enhance the antigen-binding avidity. A thermodynamic simulation showed that quite low homodimerization affinity of a catenator, e.g. dissociation constant of 100 µM, can enhance nanomolar antigen-binding avidity to a picomolar level, and that the fold enhancement sharply depends on the density of the antigen. In a proof-of-concept experiment where antigen molecules are immobilized on a biosensor tip, the C-terminal fusion of a pair of weakly homodimerizing proteins to three different antibodies enhanced the antigen-binding avidity by at least 110 or 304 folds from the intrinsic binding avidity. Compared with the mother antibody, Obinutuzumab(Y101L) which targets CD20, the same antibody with fused catenators exhibited significantly enhanced binding to SU-DHL5 cells. Together, the homodimerization-induced antibody catenation would be a new powerful approach to improve antibody applications, including the detection of scarce biomarkers and targeted anticancer therapies.

ABSTRACT

The circular economy (CE) has gained importance in the post-COVID-19 pandemic recovery. Businesses, while realising the CE benefits, have challenges in justifying and evaluating the CE benefits using available performance measurement tools, specifically when considering sustainability and other non-traditional benefits. Given the rising institutional pressures for environmental and social sustainability, we argue that organisations can evaluate their CE implementation performance using non-market-based environmental goods valuation methods. Further, the effectiveness of the CE performance measurement model can be enhanced to support supply chain sustainability and resilience through an ecosystem of multi-stakeholder digital technologies that include a range of emerging technologies such as blockchain technology, the internet-of-things (IoT), artificial intelligence, remote sensing, and tracking technologies. Accordingly, a CE performance measurement model (CEPMM) is conceptualised and exemplified using seven COVID-19 disruption scenarios to provide insights that can be addressed through CE practices. Analyses and implications are presented along with areas for future research.

ABSTRACT

PurposeThis paper explores how entrepreneurial culture (EC) and organizational learning (OL) determine the entrepreneurial orientation (EO) of new technology-based firms (NTBFs). These NTBFs are located in Isfahan Science and Technology Town (ISTT), Iran. These entities face substantial challenges in a highly-sanctioned economy, which makes adopting, acquiring or transferring new technologies daunting.Design/methodology/approachThis paper analyzes a sample of 200 NTBFs. The participants were trained chief executive officers and observed by applying pre-test and post-test designs. As a final step, empirical data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed accordingly. The structural equation modeling (SEM) with the partial least squares (PLS) approach was used by the SmartPLS2 software.Findings OL was found to mediate the relationship between EC and EO in the studied NTBFs. Additionally, the indirect effect of EC on EO and the direct impact of OL on EO were significant (=1.96). Therefore, this study focuses on selected NTBFs within Iran's particular and distinctive context.Research limitations/implicationsThis study has several limitations. These were the time consuming nature, the lack of cooperation by managers and the COVID-19 pandemic-related challenges. Nonetheless, the findings offer several important implications for practitioners, scholars and policymakers.Originality/valueThe paper sought to explore how EC and OL determine EO in Iranian NTBFs. It, thus, investigates the case of a highly-sanctioned context during the coronavirus pandemic, which imposed several basic and technological limitations on their practices.

ABSTRACT

Information is important market resource. High-quality information is beneficial to increase enterprise's reputation and reduce consumer's verification cost. This paper constructs a two-layer dynamic model, in which enterprises simultaneously conduct price and information game. The goal of profit maximization integrates two types of games into one system. The complex evolution of the two-layer system are studied by equilibrium analysis, stability analysis, bifurcation diagram, entropy and Lyapunov exponent. It is found that improving the information quality through regulations will increase involution and reduce stability of the market. Then, the block chain technology is introduced into the model for improving information quality of the market. It is found that increasing enterprises' willingness to adopt block chain can improve the information quality quickly and effectively, and that is verified by entropy value. Therefore, the application and promotion of new technologies are more effective than exogenous regulations for improving information quality in market.

ABSTRACT

Freight transportation in urban areas represents an essential activity from the standpoint of economic development;in recent years, the spread of e-commerce (also accelerated by COVID-19) has contributed to increasing the demand for freight distribution over short distances. In most cities, the approaches and measures are often based on new technologies. Nevertheless, today there are contexts wherein delivery operations represent critical tasks to be solved. Furthermore, low accessibility areas, such as small islands, present further problems due to their exclusive dependence on maritime links (and often low-reliability services). This paper tackles this topic, formulating and solving a distribution problem by linking shipping services with last-mile distribution operated by means of an automatic delivery service (parcel lockers). A test application is proposed by considering the small island of Lipari in the archipelago of the Aeolian islands (Sicily, Southern Italy). The results show that such a type of service could reduce the user's waiting time when compared to traditional home deliveries.

The development of DDS technology has contributed critically to the unprecedentedly rapid requirement for vaccines against COVID-19. LNP-based mRNA vaccines represent a subset of emerging DDS technology. Despite the groundbreaking nature of these vaccines, they are yet to be perfected and as such, new technologies are being developed to optimize these vaccines. ABSTRACT

Mobile live commerce is emerging as a new distribution channel as connectivity and information sharing become easier due to the increase in the use of SNS and mobile phones. Nevertheless, there is a lack of research in this field, and it is meaningful to look at how this new technology-based commerce leads to purchase intention in terms of the value of shopping perceived by consumers. This study aims to (1) analyze the characteristic factors of mobile live commerce, which is rapidly emerging due to brisk changes in the distribution industry in the non-contact era;and (2) verify the relationship between shopping value and purchase intention. We analyzed 283 surveys using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SM) with statistical product and service solutions (SPSS) and R-programming. We inferred that convenience, ubiquity, social presence, attractiveness, and vividness were the characteristics of mobile live commerce that had a positive effect on the pleasure value, and that social presence, attractiveness, vividness, professionalism, information quality, and compatibility had positive effects on the perceived value. The hedonic value also had a positive effect on the perceived value, and both pleasure and perceived values had strong positive effects on the purchase intention. However, the professionalism of the sources did not affect the hedonic value, and the convenience and ubiquity did not affect the perceived value.

ABSTRACT

Consumers during this spread of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to believe in the concept of "˜prevention is better than cure'. However, the preventive measure adopted varies from the traditional method where the latter resort to consuming healthy food in its original form and the earlier consumes so called healthy supplementary products that has intervention of new technology. Consumers lose clarity in understanding the method, composition, and components of health supplement items as the supplements sector expands with new inventions and advances in technology. This is made worse by deceiving marketing strategies adopted by the producer. The bold act of the producer in claiming that their product may cure serious diseases is not only unethical, but it is also a crime. Government of different jurisdictions adopts various monitoring measure to protect the rights of the consumer. In addressing this issue, this study aims at analysing the legal framework in selected jurisdictions that includes Singapore, Australia and United States of America with a view of identifying the best practices and proposing an effective legal framework. The study uses qualitative methods incorporating critical analysis on the legal framework of the selected jurisdiction. The area that is analysed consist of the accepted definition (to date this has become the main issue in regulating supplementary products), the registration process, the governing authority, and the post-registration monitoring. The analysis of data gathered through qualitative methods entails content analysis, which is supplemented by semi-structured interviews with respondents who were purposefully chosen. The findings to the study disclose the strength and weaknesses of the Malaysian legal framework that can be remedied by learning from the selected jurisdiction method. The output of this study may assist the government, policymaker, industry players and the consumer in reforming the protection of consumers to the supplementary products.

ABSTRACT

This study presents internet of things (IOT) and artificial intelligence technologies that are critical in reducing the harmful effects of this illness and assisting its recovery. It explores COVID-19's economic impacts before learning about new technologies and potential solutions. The research objective was to propose a solution for self-diagnosis, self-monitoring, and self-management of COVID-19 with personal mobiles and personal data using cloud solutions and mobile applications with the help of an intelligent IoT system, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and 5G technologies. The proposed solution based on self-diagnosis without any security risk for users' data with low cost of cloud-based data analytics by using handsets only is an innovative approach. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, the global social, economic, religious, and cultural frameworks and schedules have been affected adversely. The fear and panic associated with the new disease, which the world barely knew anything about, amplified the situation. Scientists and epidemiologists have traced the first outbreak of COVID-19 at Wuhan, China. A close examination of the genetic makeup of the virus showed that the virus is zoonotic, meaning that the virus changed hosts from animals to humans. The uncertainty associated with the above features and characteristics of the virus, as well as the high mortality rates witnessed in many parts of the globe, significantly contributed to the widespread global panic that brought the world to a standstill. Different authorities and agencies associated with securing the public have implemented different means and methods to try and mitigate the transmission of the infection as scientists and medical practitioners work on remedies to curb the spread of COVID-19. Owing to different demographics, different parts of the globe have attempted to effectively implement locally available resources to efficiently fight and mitigate the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The general framework provided by the World Health Organization (WHO) has been implemented or enhanced in different parts of the globe by locally available resources and expertise to effectively mitigate the impact of COVID-19. There is currently no effective vaccine for COVID-19, but new technology can be available within weeks to reduce the spread of the disease;current approaches such as contact tracing and testing are not secure, and the cost of testing is high for end users. The proposed solution based on self-diagnosis without any security risk for users' data with low cost of cloud-based data analytics functions by using an intelligent internet of things (IOT) system for collecting sensors data and processing them with artificial intelligence to improve efficiency and reduce the spread of COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, we aimed to investigate how sustainable development can be involved in educational contexts that use new trends in technology such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science (DS). To achieve this goal, we conducted a documentary Systematic Review using PRISMA research to find and analyze applications of sustainable development in these aforementioned contexts. In the results, we explain how some applications of both AI and DS, including Big Data and Learning Analytics among others, offer alternatives to substantially improve the educational process by allowing either education to be personalized, learning to be predicted, or even possible school dropouts to be predicted. We found that the COVID emergency sped up the introduction of these technologies in educational environments. Nevertheless, the inclusion of new technologies to develop better processes in education is still in progress and will continue to grow. In conclusion, we identified and analyzed some of the main applications found in the literature regarding new computing technologies. AI and DS have introduced new learning and teaching methods to solve different context problems that promote sustainable development while making educational environments more dynamic. On the other hand, we observed that the divide in many countries will continue due to their economic and technological situations. We describe some of the challenges that the incorporation of these technologies will bring in the near future.

ABSTRACT

Digital technology is an important tool that influences employees from the healthcare sector to manifest their intention to become an entrepreneur. Furthermore, the last pandemic crisis underlined the importance of digitalizing the relationship between medical staff and patients. The research aims to evaluate how digital technology influences the development of the entrepreneurial spirit of young people working in the medical field. The data were gathered from a sample of 395 young people with medical studies and analyzed with SMARTPLS4 using the PLS-SEM method. The motivation of young people with a background in the medical field to become entrepreneurs is strongly influenced by the objective assessment of the level of digitalization of the medical field. The usability and availability of new technology give people with a background in the medical field the desire to become an entrepreneur in this domain. The young people perceive their entrepreneurial potential in complementarity with the level of digitalization of the medical field. The research's theoretical and practical contributions are underlined by the features of the young people that consider new technology as an omnipresent tool in their life. In the medical field, there are few theoretical papers and studies on the entrepreneurial spirit of young people with a background in healthcare, and our research underlines the importance of training the entrepreneurial competencies of young people in the medical field. The COVID-19 pandemic underlined the relevance of entrepreneurial competencies in building sustainable healthcare practices and identifying the deficiencies of healthcare systems to find timely solutions for the benefit of the patients. Therefore, the challenges related to the medical services market require a new approach to doctors' entrepreneurial competencies.

ABSTRACT

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a significant transformation in the field of telehealth and telemedicine, as systems have been improved to meet the increased demand for remote healthcare services. Many ordinary technologies have been equipped to facilitate the normal relationship between patients and specialists. These technologies were put into action in a short period of time, creating a gap between the limits of common technologies and the special needs of telemedicine patients. Furthermore, focusing the lens on the special needs of sports in terms of nutrition, we see that research demonstrates the possibility of improving athletic performance by introducing technological diet support. This review aims to provide an overview of the technologies successfully implemented in telemedicine systems, a look at new modeling approaches, and a study on the roles of new enabling technologies in the process. It aims to highlight the results of the employment of telemedicine in sports dietary support and present open research challenges and recommendations for future research on a new application of technologies in telemedicine, for both the industrial and academic sectors. Literature was identified through intensive research work, reviewing articles related to the topics of new technologies in telemedicine and sports dietary support systems. The review concludes that it is possible to envisage the design of future models in the eHealth sector related to nutrition and sports, confirming the important role of telemedicine in a healthy lifestyle.

ABSTRACT

Due to the high recurrence of microbial infections, developing new technologies for preventing the dissemination of pathogens is essential, especially to prevent infection in humans. Thus, devices for the decontamination of surfaces reduce not only the spread of pathogens in the environment, but provide greater security and protection for communities. Ozone (O3) is a substance capable of reducing or eliminating several types of microorganisms owing to its biocidal capacity, including when it is dissolved in water. The objective of this study was to develop an instant decontamination device using ozonated water. To confirm its biocidal action and verify the device's efficacy, the reduction of the microbial load of important pathogens on personal protective equipment (PPE) was assessed. In addition, in order to confirm the biocidal action of ozonated water against SARS-CoV-2, in vitro tests on a viral model of Gammacoronavirus were performed. The results showed the efficacy of ozonated water in the disinfection device at concentration ranges of 0.3–0.6 mg/L and 0.7–0.9 mg/L of ozonated water, with growth reductions above 2 log10 for both concentration ranges tested and inactivation fractions above 60% (0.3–0.6 mg/L) and 80% (0.7–0.9 mg/L), with a high proportion of the tested PPE showing 100% microbial reduction. In vitro results for the evaluation of ozonated water in a viral model showed a 99.9% reduction percentage in the concentration range of 0.3 to 0.5 mg/L and a 99% reduction in the concentration range of 0.6 to 0.8 mg/L, with a 5.10 log EDI50/mL and 6.95 log EDI50/mL reduction, respectively. The instant decontamination system developed in this study proved effective for microbial reduction, and we confirmed the potential of ozonated water as a biocidal agent. Therefore, the proposed decontamination device could be considered as a tool for reducing contamination on surfaces using ozonated water.

ABSTRACT

Science and technology parks (STPs) are curated locations where new technology-based firms (NTBFs) and other SMEs and firms can conglomerate and promote a culture of innovation. Overall, the aim is to construct a sustainable high-value tech entrepreneurship ecosystem, and to this end we present here some recent and novel concepts derived from approaches using a data-driven statistical foundation. This paper considers studies on the organic growth of young start-up science and technology parks by authors who have used big data, econometric analyses, panel data and computer simulations. The results and concepts are derived from industrialized countries, notably Sweden and the UK, and may well be applicable to many regions and emerging economies. The findings are of interest to regional development, technology entrepreneurs considering choosing an STP to inhabit, as well as those in STP central teams, specializing in management and enterprise development, including the sustainable growth of new parks.

The global spread of COVID-19 highlights the urgency of quickly finding drugs and vaccines and suggests that similar challenges will arise in the future. This underscores the need for ongoing efforts to overcome the obstacles involved in the development of potential treatments. Although some progress has been made in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in drug discovery, virologists, pharmaceutical companies, and investors seek more long-term solutions and greater investment in emerging technologies. One potential solution to aid in the drug-development process is to combine the capabilities of the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), edge computing (EC), and deep learning (DL). Some practical frameworks and techniques utilizing EC, IoMT, and DL have been proposed for the monitoring and tracking of infected individuals or high-risk areas. However, these technologies have not been widely utilized in drug clinical trials. Given the time-consuming nature of traditional drug- and vaccine-development methods, there is a need for a new AI-based platform that can revolutionize the industry. One approach involves utilizing smartphones equipped with medical sensors to collect and transmit real-time physiological and healthcare information on clinical-trial participants to the nearest edge nodes (EN). This allows the verification of a vast amount of medical data for a large number of individuals in a short time frame, without the restrictions of latency, bandwidth, or security constraints. The collected information can be monitored by physicians and researchers to assess a vaccine's performance.

ABSTRACT

PurposeContactless shopping concepts meet the needs of those consumers who want to minimise social interactions, especially due to COVID-19;they also offer added value by combining the advantages of traditional shopping with digital features that stem from online shopping. The development of digitalised retail concepts has been made possible through digitisation and the use of new technologies. To date, the concepts have been created with various formats through the application of the most advanced Industry 4.0 technologies. This paper aims to provide a deepened understanding of the latest trends and draws attention to the various classes, including shopping functionalities and features.Design/methodology/approachThis paper performs a review of current disruptive and new business retail concepts within the grocery retail industry in Germany. Therefore, a secondary research methodology and observations were performed to create an overview and a categorization. This categorization has been used to identify the related cases.FindingsThe results add to the literature as follows. First, a matching of contactless shopping to innovative business models is made. Second, a status-quo analysis of contactless shopping solutions in Germany is carried out with defined set of criteria. This study created a list of all major available contactless shopping solutions. Third, this study examines two new business models, namely, automated vending machines and walk-in stores, which meet the changes in consumer behaviour and needs in times of the COVID-19 pandemic.Originality/valueThis paper provides a deeper understanding of the latest trends within the retail industry and draws attention to disruptive business models as well as the functionalities and features of shopping solutions. New store concepts launched during the COVID-19 pandemic have resulted in unique selling propositions of 24-h everyday shopping and contactless shopping.
